What it means: AI Slop

AI slop is a judgment about the experience of encountering content, not simply a label for its production method. It suggests something plentiful, generic and made with little regard for the reader. An AI-assisted illustration or carefully edited article is not automatically slop. The accusation usually combines repetition, weak information and an obvious attempt to capture attention.

I searched for a recipe and got six pages of AI slop before I found a list of ingredients.

People apply it to images, text, videos and automated replies. Because it is a dismissive label, the speaker’s expectations and taste are part of the meaning.

Why it matters

Where it came from

The word slop already carried associations with unappetizing leftovers and careless work. Its application to generated media gave people a compact way to describe a new kind of feed fatigue. The American Dialect Society selected slop as its 2025 Word of the Year, announcing the result in January 2026. Its report also records AI slop as a 2024 nominee. These are documented milestones, not evidence of the first person to use the phrase.
