Cheap, repetitive AI-generated content that clogs a feed or search result without giving you much worth reading or watching.
What does AI slop mean?
You open a recipe page and scroll through paragraphs that say almost nothing. Your feed serves another strange generated image, then several more just like it. AI slop is the dismissive name for that kind of content. The complaint is usually about the low quality, the sheer amount of it, or both. People use the label for text, pictures, videos and replies.

Calling something slop is a judgment call. One person may see lazy filler where another simply dislikes the style. Just because AI was involved doesn't mean the label applies. The complaint is about what the work is like to read or watch.
Why it matters
A single bad post is easy to skip. A whole feed of them makes finding anything worthwhile feel like work. That frustration also turns up in jokes about dead internet theory, where the replies seem just as manufactured as the posts.
Where it came from
Slop already suggested something messy and unappetizing. The American Dialect Society recorded AI slop as a 2024 Word of the Year nominee, then chose slop for 2025. The result was announced in January 2026. These dates mark when the term started getting wider recognition. Who first used it is still unclear.
