What does vibe researching mean?

You ask a chatbot about a topic, follow up on an interesting detail, and pretty soon you've got a tidy account of the whole subject — without having opened a single source. Vibe researching is the name people are starting to use for that habit: going along with an explanation just because it sounds right. Some use it more loosely, for any kind of casual research done with AI.

The joke is the moment the speaker realizes the research was less solid than it looked. An invented book is an obvious warning. A real book that does not support the claim can be harder to catch.

Why it matters

A tidy explanation can make a subject feel settled before you have checked it. AI summaries can still be a starting point: names, questions and references to investigate. The problem comes when that starting point quietly turns into the evidence for something you repeat.
