What does prompt engineering mean?
Suppose you want a chatbot to turn meeting notes into a short report. You explain what to include, show an example and check what it produces. Then you adjust the request where it went wrong. That is prompt engineering in a straightforward form. The work is in making the task clear and finding out whether the instructions help.
How people use it
The useful bit of prompt engineering was giving it a good example of the report, not telling it to be a genius.

The term can describe careful testing or, more casually, someone spending a long time rewriting a request. A dramatic opening such as “you are a world-class expert” may look impressive, but the useful detail could be something much simpler: what the finished report should contain.
Why it matters
Small changes in a request can make the answer more useful. There is still no wording that guarantees the result is correct. In internet jokes, the painstaking side of this work shades into promptmaxxing, where perfecting the prompt becomes a task of its own.
